Seeing as I always gather great ideas from others online, I thought it only fair to share this “virtual book series” reading unit for grade 2 that my co-teacher Ms. Yuka and I recently completed.  The lessons are listed via image thumbnails in the sequential order that the lessons were taught – in our minds there is a progression to them.  Clicking on the link should get you a viewable version of the slide that you can copy/edit or use the associated Seesaw Activity link in the caption for that lesson.  The Seesaw Activities are complete with a screen casted mini-lesson of sorts and then templates/instructions and clickable scaffolds where required.  This unit is loosely based on the TC Series Book Clubs unit, but adapted to fit within the constraints of our virtual environment.

This first lesson is all about collecting information on the main characters in the series.

The second lesson builds one the first lesson by describing the series characters through their words and actions.

The third lesson is about describing how characters respond to the challenges they face.

The fourth lesson asks students to make predictions within their book.

The fifth lesson asks students to make predictions based on what they know usually happens from events in books previously read in the series.

Lesson 6 is all about identifying the main message or lesson in the book.

Finally, Lesson 8 is all about sharing the love of our series by making a video recommendation to our friends.

And that’s it.  We think.  Our best effort anyway.  Major standards targeted:

RL.2.2: “Identify and explain the life lesson or moral of the story.”

RL.2.3: “Describe how a character responds to major events.”

RL.2.6: “Acknowledge different points of views and perspectives.”

RL.2.7: “Use illustrations to help comprehend the text better.”

The intention behind these series of lessons was to at least introduce series books to our grade 2 readers, while leaving them with some good ideas of books/series they might try to read over the summer holidays.
